Academics
Stillman College is a private Presbyterian liberal arts college in Tuscaloosa, Alabama that looks to instill in students the ability to think logically and conduct independent research in pursuit of scholarship. All staff are members of the clergy, and students must complete religious general education requirements, ultimately developing a “sense of place” that encourages academic rigor and a commitment to the common good. Stillman places high value on innovation, and classrooms (and online classes) incorporate modern learning techniques and technology to prepare students for the 21stcentury workplace. Curriculums are constantly updated, and extracurricular activities that promote learning and leadership are emphasized for all majors and divisions. Community service is a common theme throughout all programs, and the campus includes a shared garden where students can engage with locals and help provide sustainable, healthy food and exercise programs. Stillman is also the first school in the state to join Going for Gold, a long-term initiative with other HBCUs to advance equitable cancer care through research and funding.
Career
The honorable idea of The Stillman Man and Woman is laced throughout all activities; Thursdays are reserved for chapel and religious-themed guest speakers, and the school partners with the University of Alabama and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference to conduct an annual “Realizing the Dream” program, which focuses on social justice and equality. The recently opened Williams Institute for Leadership, Education Equity, and Race Relations in America provides opportunities for research discourse and debate through regular lectures, symposiums, and retreats. The Stillman Choir can be found performing throughout campus, and several Greek fraternities and sororities on campus provide further opportunity for community and service.
Culture
Career Services is available to help students with resumes, portfolios, and correspondence, as well as offering guidance on networking, and professional etiquette. It also helps set students up with internships and externships, and assists students in their job search after graduation. Payscale.com says the average base salary for a Stillman graduate is $63,000 a year. Notable alumni include civil rights activist Ruth Bolden, NFL player Junior Galette, and Olympic gold medalist Jeff Henderson.
