State University of New York - University at Albany (UAlbany)

The University at Albany is located in the heart of New York State's capital region. Albany, a mid-sized city with thriving government, healthcare and technology sectors, has ranked on LinkedIn's 2026 "Cities on the Rise" list for two years running. The report, identifying Albany as one of the country's emerging hubs for jobs and career growth, also recognized the University at Albany as one of the region's top employers.

We have three distinct campuses: the Uptown Campus, Downtown Campus and Health Sciences Campus.

The Uptown Campus is our main campus and hub of student activity, situated on more than 500 acres on the northwest edge of Albany. It has all the benefits of a suburban setting, like abundant green space and quiet, while also having easy access to the urban parks of Albany, as well as top-notch performing arts venues, festivals, city parks, restaurants and more.

The Downtown Campus is a few miles away from the Uptown Campus, and its classic Gregorian-style buildings acted as UAlbany's main campus until the 1960s. Recently renovated, today it houses the Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy, the School of Criminal Justice, the School of Social Welfare, and the College of Nanotechnology, Science, and Engineering.

The Health Sciences campus sits on a former pharmaceutical complex a few miles away in Rensselaer, NY, one of the region's booming bioscience research and high-tech centers. It's home to the School of Public Health and its research facilities, and a long-standing, highly collaborative partnership with the New York State Department of Health.

Facilities at the University at Albany offer students modern amenities and state-of-the-art features across living, learning and recreation.

Over the past decade, the Uptown Campus has undergone significant updates and new construction, adding new science and art facilities, administration buildings and wellness facilities. Athletics facilities also had facelifts recently, including our basketball arena, the Broadview Center, which was totally revamped in 2023.

You can find updated and expanded spaces on the Downtown Campus as well. In May 2024, we opened the doors to the newly renovated home of the College of Nanotechnology, Science, and Engineering, allowing for expanded programming in engineering, computer science and more.

Some other highlights include:

• The Albany NanoTech Complex, one of the most advanced nanotechnology facilities of its kind in North America, where our students participate in real-world research and other hands-on experiences.
• ETEC, UAlbany's newest state-of-the-art facility, holds LEED Platinum certification, the highest sustainability rating from the U.S. Green Building Council and is a hub for innovation, scholarship, applied research and commercial development designed to foster cross-disciplinary collaborations to confront complex problems.
• The Massry School of Business, home to the student-run Saxbys at Morris's Café, where students put classroom knowledge into practice through experiential learning, managing every aspect of the business while earning academic credit.
• A $16.5M supercomputer, held at the renowned RNA Institute and powered by NVIDIA DGX systems, is currently the most capable AI supercomputer within SUNY and among the largest at a university in the United States.
• New York State Mesonet, the nation's most advanced and largest early warning weather detection network, resides on UAlbany's Uptown Campus and provides unprecedented research and learning opportunities to students.
• The Well, a new recreation and wellness center at Colonial Quad, includes a spinning room, cardio space, functional fitness suite, meditation room, mat room and more.
• The Esports arena, newly renovated and opened in the fall of 2024, is home to our nationally recognized competitive esports team and is open for regular use for all students.
• A new makerspace, equipped with 3D printers, laser cutters, soldering irons and a variety of other tools and hardware, is available to all students to create, invent and learn.

UAlbany's location in the Capital District offers a great advantage when it comes to internships, experiential learning, community service, outdoor recreation and easy access to major cities in the Northeastern U.S. Albany is home to the third-largest seat of government in the U.S., ideal for those interested in gaining experience in fields related to government, law, politics and social justice. The Capital District also has a robust business and tech scene. Our students are placed in a range of internship, research and other professional development opportunities across business disciplines as well as computer science, engineering, nanotechnology, and more. International study abroad programs offer students even more opportunities to learn and spread their wings, with 80+ countries to choose from among UAlbany's 120+ global partnerships and access to any SUNY institution's study abroad programs.

The University at Albany places a high value on giving back to the community, and our students complete over 90,000 hours of service in the Capital District every year. Our 20+ service-based student organizations, with missions ranging from early childhood education to cancer awareness, give students ample opportunities to get involved. Many of the other 250+ student organizations on campus also engage in service projects throughout the year.

Students can access regional bus routes from campus for free to stay connected to Albany's energetic city scene. Centrally located in the Northeastern U.S., and at the heart of the Empire State, Albany is also a perfect homebase for exploring other cities — New York City, Boston and Montreal are each about a three-hour drive away and easily accessible by bus or train. Hiking, biking, snow sports and more are plentiful in the nearby Adirondack, Catskill and Berkshire mountains.
