Academics
Educating the “head, heart, and hand” is at the core of Jarvis Christian College, where intellect is encouraged just as much as spirituality and service to create well-rounded leaders of tomorrow. The Hawkins, Texas, institution—affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)—offers degree programs in the fields of education, religion, and criminal justice, along with specializations like kinesiology. Biology students are also invited to partake in nursing programs through JCC’s unique partnership with the University of Texas at Tyler. Though the institution currently only offers associate and bachelor’s degrees, by 2023, the first master’s degree programs will roll out, officially establishing the college as a university. In order to adapt to the evolving needs of students, JCC recently became part of an online college consortium that offers remote learning opportunities and promotes continued studies during summer breaks. Hosted by the Acadeum platform, undergrads can choose from varied courses provided by a number of accredited colleges and universities, accessing additional options that are not always available in JCC classrooms.
Career
Life at Jarvis Community College is enriching both within and without the classroom. The coed campus hosts four fraternities and four sororities, as well as a thriving athletics department that participates in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). The JCC Bulldogs offer a variety of team sports, from basketball and baseball to track and field and bowling. The college’s golf program has received a grant from the PGA Tour and United Airlines that allows for travel to and participation in more highprofile tournaments. Extracurricular activities also include the competitive Jarvis Christian College Choir and JCC Band, as well as cheerleading and dance programs. Outdoor opportunities are also abundant on the JCC campus, including the availability of the two-mile Goodwin Nature Trail and an outdoor classroom/pavilion. Students and the public are able to walk, jog, and bike the trail when weather permits. As well, the outdoor classroom/pavilion allows biology, ecology, and chemistry students to partake in unique educational opportunities. As a Christian-affiliated college, religious life is a cornerstone of JCC. The Smith-Howard Chapel offers weekly services on campus, and there are Sunday school opportunities to enhance religious studies.
Culture
Graduates of one of Jarvis Christian College’s bachelor programs can expect to earn around $62,000 annually, according to Payscale.com. Notable alumni include clothing designer Woody Wilson, comedian and radio show host Edwin Douglas, and famed jazz saxophonist David “Fathead” Newman, who is known for his work with the legendary Ray Charles. One of the newest careers programs the school offers is “Dr. Marc’s Masterclass: Advice from the Pros.” It’s led by Dr. Marc Williams, JCC’s assistant vice president for Innovation and Technology, who is also part of the leadership in the business management program. His program features career advice from a series of guest speakers, each a professional in their own field.
