Career Experience
I have been a tutor at Tutor.com since August 2020. Between 2000 and 2020 I was a researcher in computational astrophysics, as well as particle physics. My expertise is on gravitational waves, black holes, general relativity, and cosmology. I also did research on three body orbits in Newtonian gravity, theoretical particle physics, neutrinos, exoplanets, and fractional calculus. More than ten of those years were in scientific computing-- data analysis algorithm development for exoplanets and gravitational waves, feasibility assessments for observational and noise-mitigation techniques using Monte-Carlo simulations in the context of dark matter and dark energy or gravitational wave detector environmental noise, numerical solutions to differential equations primarily in the context of evolving orbits of stars and planets or black holes, and the development of a low-storage algorithm to compute fractional order integrals and derivatives. Although I'm not currently a computer science tutor (because I've taken very few formal computer science classes), I have worked in Python, C++, FORTRAN, C, some parallel programming, some databases, a few other languages, some machine learning, and primarily linux environments. I am not currently running linux, though. If it were in a physics or math context, I believe I could be most helpful with Python or pandas currently. During that time in academia, I led and graded introductory physics labs for about five cumulative years, graded graduate and upper level undergraduate physics, monitored the progress of research students, gave review sessions, and held office hours. I have since then spent a couple of years answering student questions on social media on a volunteer basis prior to retiring that role and becoming a professional tutor. I am a calculus, physics, and astronomy tutor. If you have upper level physics questions, I would also be happy to take a look, although I can make no promises.
I Love Tutoring Because
I think students who come to tutoring are serious about success. I want to help them achieve their dreams. I really believe in the importance of education and learning. I have been tremendously lucky to have had the chance to learn and do so much of what I had hoped to do as a child, and I would like to make other people's dreams possible and return some of the knowledge I have gained. I also enjoy applying my background as a physicist and as a physics teaching assistant to solve problems.
